Wow, what a few weeks, months, years!
Nobody needs reminding what we’ve all been facing over the past few years and what’s potentially just around the corner. We’re all (mostly) in the same boat and all need to find our ways to stay positive and move ahead. We take heart in the fact we’ve managed to survive what’s been thrown and us and continue to be there for you as much as possible through these tricky times.
But the world is constantly changing and as a business we have to stay flexible if we are to be able to change in tune with it. This is why after lots of soul-searching, we’ve decided to close the doors to our café at the end of the year. I’m writing this to tell you why and what this means moving forward. I’ll reply to your FAQs below.
No! At the heart of our business has always been Cornish Pasties. The original idea when I started the company with my good friend Paul was to import award-winning Cornish pasties and sell them to individuals, businesses, cafes, restaurants etc… Like all startups with just an idea, our ‘business plan’ saw us spontaneously open a café and get sucked into the world of Afternoon Teas and fabulous coffee! What we’re doing now, is going back to the roots of the original business idea and will be working to bring the pasties to our fans, wherever you are.
Of course we love you! And without you we wouldn’t have made it this far. And yes, we will miss you! But we have to do what gives us the best chance of bringing you pasties for the longer term. Running a café takes a lot of time, effort, enthusiasm and money. We’ve decided to stop running uphill into a headwind, to briefly take shelter behind a tree and approach our destination from a different perspective.
Honestly? The rules being imposed on us to import into the EU after Brexit made it very difficult at first to import pasties. The increased paperwork and costs involved in importing meat and dairy led to us offering one meat variety and 4 vegan pasties. Thankfully all of these are award-winning and we’re proud to have weathered this storm. Lockdowns imposed during lockdown hit us very hard but on the other hand allowed us to test doing business in a different way. Ironically this helped us see other opportunities too. The tipping point to this decision is the rising costs of…well, almost everything! Electricity, gas, rent, wages – everything is becoming more expensive at once and at some point it stopped making sense. We don’t want to be charging 5 euros for a coffee. We’re also consumers who have to pay that and it leaves a sour taste in the mouth.
You will be able to order them online for us to send in the post. Until now we haven’t been able to offer this as planned as we simply haven’t had the capacity to do this while running the shop. We also hope to have various pickup outlets for you to collect from and will let you know these once we can. We also have some partners selling pasties as part of their menu and these places are well worth a visit. We will list these too. And that leaves you…
We found there are two types of businesses who benefit from selling pasties: a) Food and drinks establishments who want to offer pasties as part of the menu b) Businesses who buy frozen pasties for their staff to bake at work as and when they like. If this could be you, then get in touch with us today to see what we can work out for you.
We’re planning to stay open until the 23rd December for you. We will probably have to change some of our opening times but will do our best to be open for as much as we can. As for what will be in the shop after us, we have no idea. However, if you always wanted to run a café and would like to take things over the way they are without any hassle, talk to us, there’s still might be the opportunity!
There are bound to be some questions I haven’t answered here. If you have a question not covered here, please let us know and we’ll try to reply as soon as we can.
Thanks for listening! Come visit us while you can!

]]>We‘re hoping that our new pallets of pasties will be arriving sometime this week. That means by next week at the latest we’ll be fully stocked again.
One of the biggest hurdles we face is being able to bring over meat or dairy. There have to be so many additional traces carried out and this involves so much time and cost that it’s impossible to do this for each variety of pasty. Add on to this the cost of a vet’s certificate, then we have to ask ourselves if we’re sane to be continuing!
There’s no way we can call ourselves a Cornish pasty shop without having the traditional pasty. Rest assured, the Traditional Cornish Pasties are on their way! Unfortunately that’s it for the meat or dairy at at this stage (my son will hate me as I promised to get him sausage rolls :( ) – but do not panic Mr Mainwaring - we have some other fabulous pasties to choose from. We can offer you a Keralan Cauliflower, Chickpea & Onion Bhaji Pasty, a Butternut Squash, Spinach and Vegan Feta Pasty, a Peppered Steak-Less Pasty and a Spicy Mexican Bean Roll. They‘re all plant-based meaning vegans can be happy but meat-eaters won’t be disappointed either!
That‘s right, in the lead up to Christmas we‘re going to pencil in some delivery dates throughout the region - so watch this space!
We’re currently getting the logistics in place to send you frozen pasties in the post! That’s right: whether you’re living as close as Cologne or further afield in Füssen, we’re hopeful to have this in place early December.
As you’ve guessed, things aren’t easy at the moment. But we’re determined to make this work - and with your continued support, we might just manage it. Thank you 🙏
Dan and the TP Team
]]>Dear cherished Tasty Pasty customers,
Whether you think Brexit is a good or bad thing (that’ll depend on your perspective!), our small business is currently being affected by the new rules and regulations in place importing into the EU.
In the past, we would work with our bakery to decide which varieties to make for you and would subsequently order these. A week or so later, the pasties would arrive and the pasty joy could begin!
Now, before the pasties can even leave the bakery, we have to arrange for vets to visit the bakery and fill out lots of forms for each variety of pasty we would like to bring you. There are naturally more costs involved - and these are per variety, not per shipment (unfortunately). This has to be carried out the day before the shipment leaves. And that leads us to logistics.
The logistics company now needs to ensure that everything that should be on the pallet, is on the pallet. If any of the paperwork is incomplete, the pasties will be sent back to Cornwall. All the information needs to be inputted into a variety of systems and need to be in line with the requirements of the German Zoll. And there’s our next hurdle.
Before we can even consider importing anything to Germany, the Zoll needs to provide us with our own EORI number. We are now finally in the process of receiving this but that’s not the end of the story. We now are waiting for confirmation from the Zoll which Customs Tariff will be levied on the pasties. We hope to hear next week about this.) We might be lucky and there won’t be one, but it is likely to be anything around 10% on the cost of the pallet. This leads us to costs.
The additional costs (vets certificates, logistics and paperwork, Zoll) is likely to add 2,000 Euros to the cost of a pallet of pasties. That’s right, 2,000 Euros. The only way to make this at all viable at this stage based on the information we have, is to order A LOT in one go. Remember, the vets and logistics costs are a one off and can be spread across pallets. Of course, we don’t have those funds at the moment.
We’re waiting to hear back from the Zoll this coming week and then hopefully we’ll know how realistic it’ll be to order some more pasties anytime soon.
We’ve had numerous conversations regarding this and are definitely open to more of the same. So far, we are however yet to be convinced that we could deliver the Cornish pasties WE want you to be enjoying and at a price that doesn’t leave a bitter aftertaste for anyone. It all has to add up somehow.
We’re open to ideas, and if there is anyone out there with an idea, a kitchen, a history of professional Cornish Pasty making :) or similar, we would love to hear from you.
Since opening the Tasty Pasty Company in 2014, we’ve learnt a lot! (I know I have!). As some of you know, Tasty Pasty is a project driven by my passion for British food and drink, British culture, the breaking down of stereotypes and the creation of a little piece of ‘home’ for anyone who misses the UK. This is still a learning game and we’re determined to find a way to move beyond the current difficulties. In the meantime, you might find different things on offer but trust in one thing: we won’t give up without a fight!
I hope you enjoyed this first blog post. Watch this space for more to come. And feel free to leave your comments!
Cheers, Dan
